The Physics Department of Gurucharan College, Silchar has been organising events like Annual Physics Colloquium, Seminars, Lectures, Invited talks etc. for quite a long time every year. As scheduled, the students of B.Sc. Final Year, Physics Hons, were supposed to present their work in March 2020 earlier this year. However, the programme had to be postponed because of the COVID-19 Pandemic because this fatal pandemic forcing several sectors to undertake several fundamental changes. In the educational sector, in India has been shut down since March 2020. Efforts are being taken to change a shift towards the e-learning process by various schools, colleges, and other educational institutions. Pushing the limits, the Department of Physics, decided to go ahead with a master plan by collaborating with Centre of Advanced Studies & Innovation Lab (CASILab) using their unique MOODLE based Online e-Conferencing platform, called CASILab VIRTUAL CONFERENCE ROOM. The online seminar of the students of the final year, Physics department, G C College were conducted on 10th June 2020 in due presence of the Head of the department, Associate professors, Associates of CASILab & others in the aforesaid virtual conference room.

The program started at 10.30 am with a ‘Special Talk’ on ‘GNU Plot Helper’ by Dwaipayan Deb (Ramnuj Gupta Memorial College, Silchar) who neatly explained how his utility software in conjunction with GNU Plot works. Immediately after that lecture, Students’ E-Conference started and we have presented following projects in groups prepared under supervision of our teachers:

· Special Talk, Dwaipayan Deb (R G College): GNUPlot Helper - A new user- friendly raider for plotting graph in GNUPlot

· Vishal Deb (Presenter) & Anas Ahmed: To find the Rydberg constant of hydrogen atom using diffraction spectrometer (Supervisor: Dr M R Nath (GCC))

· Prasenjit Chakraborty (Presenter) & Ibran Hussain: Determination of the coefficient of viscosity using software TRACKER (Supervisor: S Sen (GCC)

· Rahul Siddiki, Fakhrul Islam Laskar: To Study the Hysteresis Curve of iron using CRO (Supervisor: K Sunar (GCC)

· Zeeshan Laskar, Siddhartha Dey, Subhrajyoti Sinha, Temperature Monitor Using Scilab and Arduino (Supervisor: A Nag (GCC)

· Parasar Deb, Ajitesh Dhar, Bikram Nath: Measurement of astronomical distances using trigonometric parallax method (Supervisor: I Dey (GCC))

· Debyojyoti Nag, Hrittik Yadav, & Pallavi Deb: Study of variation of terminal velocity with increasing mass (Supervisor: R K Nath (GCC)

As per the time schedule notified earlier, every group is given a time of twenty minutes followed by Q & A Session. As the program started gaining its momentum, the Q & A session increases after every talk and all the students have to put their sincere efforts to defend their project against the queries and arguments raised by participants of the conference. Overall, the virtual e-Conference facility enables us to present our collaborating projects staying at home strictly adhering the ‘Social Distancing Protocol’ issued by GOI due to Global COVID-19 Pandemic. The program concluded at 1.30 pm. The main purpose of the project presentation was for the partial fulfillment of the requirement of TDC PHYSICS Honours Syllabus as per university rule and it could have stopped due to pandemic unless we did not explore e-learning process arranged by our teachers.

Finally, I wish to emphasize that it would not have been possible unless we get support from many individuals. I express my sincere gratitude to the Moderator, Dr. Surajit Sen, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Gurucharan College, Silchar who not only put his valiant efforts for a smooth completion of the seminar, but also laid the foundation of the online version e-Conferencing facility for the students in our college. I also convey my sincere regard to Dr. Mihir Ranjan Nath, Head of the Department, Department of Physics, Gurucharan College, Silchar and other teachers, for their monumental support and valuable suggestions. I am thankful to my student-friends who have been supportive and innovative in their project preparation and online presentation.

Yes, online classes can never be a substitute to physical classroom teaching. But this are testing times. It is true that with COVID-19 Pandemic, new challenges and uncertainties have emerged for educators, parents, and students, but at the same time we have also entered the areas of many innovative opportunities. Our online seminar on Physics may be considered as a ‘start’ to the new era of education in this region. At the same time, necessary efforts should be taken so that no students are deprived of it.

Thank you.

-Rahul Siddiki
