The Centre of Advanced Studies and Innovation Lab (CASILab) was founded to fill a critical vacuum in the research community and environment of south Assam, to function as an interdisciplinary space and organizational hub that encouraged collaboration and co-ordination amongst researchers working in the region, and particularly to provide backing and support to non-institutional and independent researchers. To that end, on 23rd October, 2019, CASILab organized its first one-day seminar and discussion meeting on physical sciences at Gurucharan College, Silchar. In attendance were about 25 faculty members, researchers, doctoral candidates and postgraduate students hailing from or working in south Assam, both within an institutional framework as well as independently.

The event was inaugurated by the principal of Gurucharan College, Dr Bibhas Deb, who iterated the importance of CASILab’s activities towards creating a flourishing environment for research in the region. His inagural speech was then followed by a number of excellent academic expository talks on a variety of topics from high energy particle physics, quantum information and condensed matter theory to astronomical remote sensing and environmental chemistry. The talks were very well-received and were followed by enthusiastic Q&A sessions between the speakers and the audience members. The interdisciplinary nature of the seminar was heartening to see, with academics from various disciplines bouncing ideas off one another and taking great interest in the work being done by researchers in and from this region.

The talks were followed by a fruitful academic discussion titled “How To Rejuvenate Research Activities Among the Institutional and Independent Researchers of South Assam”, which was open to all the participants and speakers. There was unanimous agreement for the need to have more cooperation between all interested parties and to increase the awareness of the kind of work being done by researchers in the region. The situation of independent researchers was also discussed in the meeting, regarding the lack of opportunities for collaboration and access to resources for researchers without institutional support. It was agreed that CASILab could fulfil a key role in this regard by creating bridges between communities of researchers. In recognition of the collective nature of modern scientific research, several proposals were raised by faculty members & researchers of institutions of this region to enable more open communication and to encourage collaboration in the future.

All in all, it was a fruitful gathering of like-minded academics and researchers, and hopefully this can be the first of many such meetings, and the start of a more communicative and collaborative era for research in South Assam.
